With shows like Good Eats, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, and You Gotta Eat Here (the Canadian version of triple D), the popularity of street food has continued to grow over the past couple of years and isn’t just for the likes of warm weather places like California or food-centric places like NYC.

Even K-W has picked up on the food truck trend and offered a different theme daily at Kitchener City Hall last summer, in addition to the many vendors that have been staples at the St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market and local festivals like the Multicultural Festival and Rib & Craft Beer Fest, and of course, the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival (which, by the way, is coming up on April 6!).

But, it can still be tough to find street food around town that’s not dependent on weather or festivals, which is why we recommend bringing the idea of street food into your home. You’ve probably already done this and not even known, with items like gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, pulled pork on a bun, pitas and gyros, and tacos.

What makes the difference between okay street food and great street food is spicing it up to a gourmet level. That’s why we recommend, instead of traditional beef or chicken tacos, trying fish tacos. These delicious morsels are starting to appear on local restaurant menus, but are more common in places near the ocean where fresh fish is as easy to get as Tim Horton’s is in Canada. But they can take on so much flavour depending on how you season the fish and are a unique dinner item that is sure to impress your family or even friends who stop by for a dinner party.

Plus, as winter slogs on, maybe this little taste of a sunnier locale and street food will make you feel like warmer weather isn’t so far away.
